Today on Math Out Loud, we’ll focus on the words Compatible numbers, c-o-m-p-a-t-i-b-l-e n-u-m-b-e-r-s. When two people are compatible they both get along like friends. When numbers are compatible, they are friendly also. Compatible numbers are numbers that are easy to work with mentally. They are numbers that are close to the numbers that are given in the problem. We use compatible numbers when estimating. An example of using compatible numbers is when solving 15 divided by 4. We could change the 4 to a 5 and then we coudl work the problem mentally. A non-example is when we work out the same division problem even with a remainder. We’re the Math Masters with the word story of compatible numbers on Math Out Loud.

Well done, 6th grade! Estimation skills are critical life skills. Many people go through this process in their daily lives…adjusting numbers so that they are easier to work with when an exact answer is not required. I’d say at least 50% of those people probably don’t know that the process is called “using compatible numbers”…but thanks to you many of them will now.

Super job Ms. McLeod’s 6th graders! You guys are redefining education and getting your skillsets ready for success in the 21st century.

I always knew that I solved problems differently but I didn’t know what it was called. Now I know I was using a strategy called Compatible Numbers. WOW! I wish Mrs. Page my 5th grade math teacher would have known about this strategy.

Keep this BLOG alive please and I promise to check it out to continue learning about math.

That is a great way to express math and since I taught living skills last year I think maybe even the adults should read this one and remember that we are all compatibile so lets get along from k through teachers.

I am very impressed with how you are using technology to help others learn! In fact, I learned something new from your website, and the way you gave an example will help me remember what compatible numbers are for a long time! Keep up the great work, sixth graders!
